Why the Ten Commandments?

My least favorite chapter in the whole Bible is Proverbs 31 particularly verse ten and on.  Why?  Obviously I can never fulfill most people’s idea of what a woman should be and the standards in that passage are beyond any woman’s reach imo.  All the young men in Bible College used to talk about finding a woman like that- as if it was really possible.  Perhaps we each have some of those traits, but all of them?  Not a chance!  Maybe that’s the point.  Maybe it’s to show us that we must rely on the Lord just to do a reasonable job at meeting some of the standards.

Perhaps that’s also the reason the Ten Commandments were given; not so that we completely obey them, but that we find out there’s no way we can.  They show us our sinful natures, the sin we hang on to, that no one is righteous- no not one (Rm. 3:10,23).  I hope from reading the last 10 posts on the commandments that we all feel bad and see our sin blatantly in our faces, for none of us can do right without the Lord helping us out.

For there is not a just man on earth who does good and does not sin. Ec. 7:20
But we are all as the unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as a menstruation cloth. And we all fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away. Is. 64:6
For whoever shall keep the whole Law and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all. Jm. 2:10
because by the works of the Law none of all flesh will be justified in His sight; for through the Law is the knowledge of sin. Rm. 3:20

The last verse there speaks about the Law which is basically the books of Moses of which the Ten Commandments are a part.  Those along with the others make over 600 laws to follow.  Remember, if you break one, you break them all!  Surely the only reason for this impossible task is to show us our sin, that we are condemned sinners headed for the penalty of eternal death, and that we need a Savior.  ‘Lucky’ for us God made provision for our salvation (because of His mercy and grace) in the person of Jesus Christ.

Do not think that I have come to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I have not come to destroy but to fulfill. For truly I say to you, Till the heaven and the earth pass away, not one jot or one tittle shall in any way pass from the Law until all is fulfilled. Mt. 5:17,18
For Christ also once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God, indeed being put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the Spirit; 1Pt. 3:18
For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received, that Christ died for our sins, according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures; 1Cr. 15:3,4

Jesus, by His birth, ministry, death and resurrection, fulfilled the Law completely, so we do not need to be perfect in obedience- for no man can be.  The Law and commands showed us our sin.  The Father showed us the way of salvation through Jesus Christ in His Law.  Now to be free from the death penalty of sin we must walk the path to salvation in the blood of Jesus for He is the only Way, the Truth and the Life and no one can come to the Father but by JESUS (Jh. 14:6).

Thank You Father for sending Jesus, and thank You Jesus for taking our penalty of sin for us thereby making a way of escape from eternal punishment.
